How to Wash Hair Oil Out Without Stripping Your Hair

The shampoo-first method for washing out hair oil in one or two rinses, why oil feels hard to remove, and how to keep the softness after the wash.

How to Wash Hair Oil Out Without Stripping Your Hair

The most common reason people stop oiling their hair is not the oiling. It is the wash afterwards: hair that still feels heavy, a scalp that needs a third round of shampoo, a towel that smells of sesame for a week. Almost all of that comes from one mistake, which is putting water on the hair first.

Oil and water do not mix, and shampoo is what bridges them. Order matters.

Shampoo first, water second

Before you step under the shower, take a small amount of a gentle shampoo and work it directly into the oiled scalp and lengths with a little water on your hands, just enough to spread it. It will not foam much, and that is fine. What you are doing is letting the shampoo bind to the oil. Then rinse thoroughly with warm, not hot, water.

Most people find one round like this and a quick second lather is enough. If your hair still feels coated, it usually means too much oil went in, not that the shampoo is too weak.

Do not use hot water or a harsh shampoo

Very hot water and strong clarifying shampoos remove the oil, but they also remove the softness you oiled for in the first place. Warm water and a gentle shampoo do the job in two rounds and leave the hair feeling the way it should after a ritual: soft, light and clean.

After the wash

Skip conditioner on the scalp; if you use one, keep it on the lengths and ends. Let the hair dry naturally where you can, and comb it once it is mostly dry. The shine of a well-oiled, well-washed head of hair shows on the second day more than the first.

Common questions

Why does my hair still feel greasy after washing?

Usually because water went on before shampoo, or because more oil was used than the scalp needed. Try the shampoo-first method with a smaller amount of oil next time.

Can I use a natural or herbal shampoo?

Yes. Any gentle shampoo works with the shampoo-first method. Very mild or soap-free cleansers may need a second lather.

Should I wash with cold water?

Warm water is best. Cold water leaves more oil behind; hot water strips too much.
